Music mogul Steve Aoki is a mainstay in not only electronic, but the contemporary music culture of today. The founder of Dim Mak records has worked with several of music’s top creatives, including MSTRKRFT, Bloc Party, Kid Cudi, will.i.am, and many more. Given the range of talent he works with, the diversity of his sonic palate, it’s no wonder that Steve travels a lot to sate his musical appetite. That said, his essentials reflect a lifestyle of constant movement and communication. Steve laid out what keeps him running on a 3-week trip in this edition of our ongoing Essentials feature.

DANCE STARS BRING IN THE MONEY STATESIDE
Ticket sales from dance shows are boosting concert revenue in the States.
Data from Pollstar suggests the live tour business is bouncing back, with sales from the top 100 North American tours up 1.2%.
The increase is thought to be a result of more DJs and producers entering the mainstream. The mid-year report says, “The new generation of EDM artists are starting to have a greater impact as they begin doing larger tours in more traditional arenas.”
It’s also thought that lower ticket prices and smaller venues, which have led to artists putting on more dates, are responsible for the revival.
Big names like Steve Aoki grossed $4.5 million from 88 dates at $32 a ticket. Avicii came in a close second at $4.1 million, followed by Bassnectar with $3.5 million.
Festivals are also bringing in the big bucks Stateside with Coachella Festival, which this year took place over two consecutive weekends, grossing an estimated $47.3 million.
But if you think the likes of Steve Aoki and Avicii are raking it in, what they’re making looks like small change compared to some of America’s big country singers.
US country star Kenny Chesney (yeah, us neither) managed to gross just under $34 million from playing in just eight cities. It took Steve Aoki 88 gigs to make his $4.5 million. Maybe it’s time you got out the cowboy boots out Steve.
